After the Treaty of Versailles, restrictions were imposed on the reconstruction of the German army. Clever commanders, however, found a way around these restrictions by deploying civilian vehicles that were not subject to the restrictions. This allowed them to set up motorized units and create a culture of motorization. The Zündapp, with its simple and economical operation, was one of the most advanced motorcycles of the time. It was used by tank and cavalry units and proved especially useful during combat in Russia because of its built-in heating. Although Zündapps were issued to all armed forces, they were replaced by four-wheeled vehicles after 1943.
