Het soort Tyrannosaurus rex (rex betekent ‘koning’ in het Latijn), gewoonlijk afgekort tot T. rex, is een van de meest vertegenwoordige grote theropoden. Tyrannosaurus was een tweevoetige carnivoor met een massieve schedel in evenwicht gehouden door een lange, zware staart. Ten opzichte van zijn grote en krachtige achterpoten waren Tyrannosaurus zijn voorbenen kort maar ongebruikelijk krachtig voor hun grootte en hadden twee geklauwde vingers. Het was één van de laatste niet-aviaire dinosaurussen die bestond vóór de uitsterving van het Krijt-Paleogeen.
