Wat is een kendama?

A kendama is a toy that originated in Japan. It is designed to test your dexterity. It consists of a wooden handle with two cups and a spike, to which a ball is attached by a thin string. The part of the kendama excluding the ball is called the “ken.” The ball is called a “tama.” The part of the ken that has the cups and the spike is called the “sara.”

The goal is to catch the ball in one of the cups in the most unique and challenging way possible. It first came to Europe in the 18th century as a drinking game (you had to drink if you couldn’t catch the ball). Later, in 1920, Hamaji Egusa obtained a patent to raise awareness of the toy and ensure its quality for competitions.

It has grown so popular that professional competitions are now being organized here in Europe and the U.S. to determine who the true kendama masters are. The key

The “ken” is the part you hold onto. This handle is large enough to practice various grips, and you can, for example, switch hands. The Tama

The tama is the ball of the set. Since it’s attached with a thin string, you have plenty of options for performing tricks. For example, you can adjust the length or thickness of the string. These kendamas are then referred to as a “setup.”

Sara

The sara is the part of the kendama that contains the two cups and the spike. When not in use, you carry the ball on the spike so that it stays in place. The two cups add variety to your agility exercises because you have one large cup and one small cup. Try to come up with the most fun tricks you can and practice until you get them right.
