What tools do you need for model building?

Modeling is a fun hobby where you can create very different designs. For example, you have the option of making a famous building or a nice car. If you are still very new to this hobby, you may be wondering what tools you need. We explain what modeling tools are handy to have when getting started with this. That way, you won’t get frustrated and you can easily edit and process the smallest details.

The basic tools for model making

The tools you need for a kit depends on what kind of object you want to build. For example, different parts require different tools to assemble. Below we have a list of all kinds of tools that go with the basics of model building. Without these supplies, you can’t actually do the hobby properly. It is important to note, however, that the list below does not include all the tools occasionally used for model building, but it does include the tools needed in every project.

Tweezers

Tweezers make modeling a lot less difficult. Using tweezers, you can place very small parts easily. With tweezers, you have several options to choose from. For example, there are tweezers that contain a flat end and you have tweezers with a tip. Pointed tweezers are often used because they make it easier to pick up small objects. At the time when you are very often modeling, you could buy several tweezers so that you can always use the right tool for the right application.

Hobby Knife

In addition to tweezers, you need a hobby knife for model making. This is the tool you’re going to need the most with building different designs. There are both stanley knives and hobby knives used in model making. For example, using one of these knives, you can easily cut through a piece of plastic that can be found with the stuck construction kit. You can also adjust the size by means of a blade.

Tang

Pliers are another tool that makes modeling a lot more fun and easier. This is not the most necessary tool but it is a tool that allows you to work a lot more precisely and efficiently. Find pliers that are of good quality so you can go on with the same tool for a long time.

Glue

The moment you make a mistake while making your modeling, it is helpful to be in possession of modeling glue. With the glue, you can easily make something again if something has broken. There are also a lot of choices when it comes to glue, but the one that is suitable for plastic is usually good enough. Look for a kind that has a spout that ensures you can work precisely to get the glue in the right place.

Some construction kits you cannot assemble without glue. So be mindful of what you buy and make sure you also get glue if you need it.

Sandpaper

The last essential tool needed for model building is sandpaper. With sandpaper, you make final adjustments to give small parts a slightly different shape or a nice finish, for example. With sandpaper, you have several varieties. For example, you have variants that have a very fine grain, but also variants that actually have a coarse characteristic. When modeling, it is advisable not to choose very coarse sandpaper.

Which type of sandpaper to buy depends mainly on the material being used. It is often said that you should get sandpaper between 200 and 600 grit, but we recommend getting different kinds. That way, you can easily figure out what is finest for you and also ensure a better finish.
