The Golden Hind or Hinde was an English galleon best known for its voyage around the world between 1577 and 1580, captained by Sir Francis Drake. Originally known as the Pelican, she was renamed in 1578 by Drake midway through the voyage as he prepared to enter the Straits of Magellan and named it the Golden Hind to compliment his patron, Sir Christopher Hatton, whose armor was a golden hind (a female deer). Hatton was one of the main sponsors of Drake’s world tour.<\/p>\n
