Single-cylinder engines are simple and compact, often delivering the maximum power possible within a given envelope. Cooling easier than with multiple cylinders, possibly saving further weight, especially if air cooling is used. Single-cylinder engines require more flywheel than multi-cylinder engines and the rotating mass is relatively large, limiting acceleration and sharp changes in speed. In the basic setup, they are sensitive to vibration – although in some cases it may be possible to control them with balance shafts.
